What The Innocence Project exonerates

The Innocence Project exonerates the wrongfully convicted using DNA testing and changes the legal system to avoid future injustices. In the innocence project, causes of convictions include Prison cell informants, insufficient defense, improper forensic science, DNA post-conviction testing, false confession, ocular testimony, and others were emphasized (supreme court,2017). Marvin Lamont Anderson was exempted from DNA testing in December 2001 from 99 people in the USA and was only 18 years old when charged with robbery, sodomy, removal, and rape. He was released 15 years later; however, he was pardoned for four years. On 17 July 1982, a black man, a total stranger, raped a young woman. An officer chose him as a culprit because the offender informed the victim he “had a white girl,” and the officer knew the only black male with a white female. The victim was handed the color ID card and six black-and-white shots and identified as her aggressor (Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit, 2019). The victim testified and recognized him as an assailant. He was convicted by a white jury and sentenced to 210 years in jail. There was specific physical evidence in the lab of the criminal performing conventional serology in 1982, including seminal specimen recovered from the victim’s body. The results ruled it out as the culprit and two prisoners after it was passed through a DNA database of Virginia’s convicted offender. On 21 August 2002, Gov. Mark Warner of Virginia awarded Anderson total forgiveness. He had been imprisoned for 15 years and parole for four years to establish his innocence. In 1978, Kenneth Adams was falsely jailed for rape and double homicide together with three other men. He was condemned to 75 years imprisonment; DNA testing took 18 years to forgive him. A recently engaged pair were kidnapped from a tank near the workplace and fired, and the woman’s gang was raped. A false tip led to the arrest. Paula Gray was questioned, Adam’s girlfriend, who could not read or write (Court of Appeals, 6th Circuit, 2019). For a couple of days, she was detained without legal counsel and then told a grand jury she was present while the four guys had raped the woman. She also said she observed Dennis Williams shooting the two victims. During the hearing, she recalled her tale a month later, saying that she was drugged and that cops just informed her what to speak. Jimerson’s accusations were withdrawn, but she was again accused of murder and perjury. The prison informant re-surrendered his evidence in 1994, indicating that he had misled Williams and Rainge overhearing the assassination because prosecutors offered a settlement on the charges he had faced. The four men acquired access to DNA test evidence.
DNA testing in 1996 exonerated all four men and involved three additional persons, two confessing and pleading guilty to the killings in 1997. They learned police were informed early on of the identity of the actual criminals but did not follow the lead. The Innocence Project enhances the system for all. Innocent people avoid unjust arrests and prosecutions, more potent instruments are supplied for capturing actual aggressors, victims get justice and public trust in the system.
