The Effects of European Settlements

What do you see as the primary effects European settlement had on the indigenous people of the Americas? Provide some examples. Next, consider the various groups of European settlers, including the wealthy, the poor, and the laborers, including indentured servants and black slaves. Discuss some of the differences that arose in the various colonies that were established. Share some examples to illustrate your points.

The European settlement spreading diseases was definitely a primary effect they had on indigenous people of the Americas. It wiped out a lot of the communities. For example, if the European spread measles or smallpox to the indigenous people it would be passed throughout their whole entire communities which cause death among them. Indigenous people population reduced a lot. With passage to the Colonies expensive for all but the wealthy, the Virginia Company developed the system of indentured servitude to attract workers (Oregon Public Broadcasting, 2003 – 2014). This seemed like a great system especially after the war which left a lot of people without work. Many people thought of indentured servants as slaves but in reality, they were not. Contracts were made for servants anywhere between four to seven years in exchange for freedom dues and a place to stay. However, if they did anything wrong, they would have to stay longer than their contract and not to mention the punishment they endure. For example, if a servants signed up for four years but she got pregnant, more time would be added on to her.

The primary effects of European settlement had on the indigenous people of the Americas began in the Caribbean and central Mexico, explores were looking for wealth and titles by either force or through trades with the natives, along with the spread of religious passions. Many of Spain’s acquisitiveness knew no bounds as groups of explorers searched for the next instant riches from new undiscovered land such as mountains of gold and silver. Portuguese traders traveled to western Africa with the introduction of the African slave trade, seeing the value of this source of labor, Portuguese began exporting African slaves along with ivory and gold. The English promoted colonization through forming joint stock companies, these had gained the approval of the English crown to establish colonies. The first permanent settlement was the Virginia Company which was established by a joint stock company and then Jamestown settlement was establish by a group of men who sailed up Chesapeake Bay. The hardship that these colonies faced were harsh winters, diseases, hunger and poor relationships with the local natives.
