The dilemma facing the Arab American female

In Arabian Jazz, Abu-Jaber offers a solution for the dilemma facing the Arab American female. The novel places an Arab American woman in such a position that she can view both cultures and criticize them. She is not defiant or suspicious of the dominating culture. This is so because she was not directly victimized by colonialism (Pickens, Ther, 217). She has also experienced patriarchal oppression due to being immersed in her culture. Thus, she is in a great position where she becomes a prime candidate who can advocate for change with the culture of Arabs. According to (Majaj,52) contemporary Arab Americans seek affirmation in their identities without reducing their complexity, and at the same time, they are claiming for adequate classification in their experiences. This is contrary to early Arab-Americans who sought strategies such as strategic deployment and assimilation to claim space amidst the culture of white Americans.
The author, Abu-Jaber, pays attention to how her characters interact with their surroundings. It is through such interactions that she can explore the complexity of her characters’ identities (Gale, Cengage). This aspect creates an innovative view of the identity of Arab Americans. The way Abu-Jaber explores and exposes the two cultures is quite critical. It gives the Arab American female voice that she never had in the past. She is in a position to explore her issues with either of the two cultures and understand the formation and reformation of her identity even as cultures are merging and diverging. According to (Suleiman), people’s identity is not an innate feature, but instead, it is shaped by various outside factors and self-reflection elements. This is the case with the Americans who speak Arabic. In the novel, the characters explore their definition of identity through their encounters with other characters and the experiences they have gathered while executing their Arab and American roles.
