Analysis
In the Arabian Jazz novel, Diana Abu-Jaber explores the Arab American identity from a new perspective. Arabian Jazz is a clear indication that of the attempt made by the Arab American literary community in moving past the discussion that paid attention to how to preserve cultural identity, which has been an area of primary focus (Gale, Cengage). Issues such as poverty, marginalization, and exploitation plaguing some sectors of this particular multicultural group have been addressed. The novel has also attempted to explore female identity.
Since the early 20th century, Arab American literature has focused on issues that relate to identity. However, it is only in recent years that it began focusing on creating the American hybrid identity (Chrif, Salwa Essayah, 219). This identity has been explored by Diana Abu Jaber in a different perspective focusing on identity assimilation. To analyze the issues related to identity comprehensively, a focus is given to Arabian Jazz.
In this section, I will use the works of writers such as Suleiman Michael, Gale, Cengage, Moniem, Shimaa Abdel, Majaj and Chrif, Salwa Essayah, in briefly outlining what others have done concerning Arab American identity in the United States and how it has affected the Arab Americans literature.
According to (Suleiman Michael), during the late 19th century, immigrants from Arab land came to the United States in huge numbers. They moved out of their motherland because of the harassment and exploitation they faced from the government during Ottoman rule. To them, America seemed to be the Promised Land. They anticipated investment opportunities, freedom, and wealth as they had been under oppression for some time. Many Arabs coming to the U.S. had the idea of accumulating wealth and returning to their homeland. This is why the issues of identity did not arise at first. Suleiman states that they were just mere transients seeking psychological and social security. They found these things within their families and churches.
