Introduction
The goal to achieve sustainability and protect the environment globally has been faced with many challenges, including eight major threats identified by the United Nations. These threats include energy sources, lack of educational opportunities, inappropriate use of technology, civil war, poor health, climate change, and cultural taboos. Among these eight threats, energy sources, globalization, climate change, and inappropriate use of technology have been identified as critical threats to the environment worldwide. Although poor population health, lack of education opportunities, cultural taboos, and civil war pose threats to the environment, they are not as critical as the four aspects mentioned earlier. Therefore, this paper intends to discuss two of the less critical threats to the environment, cultural taboos and poor health, and identify why these aspects are considered less critical than others.
Threat One
Cultural Taboos
A taboo refers to an activity or behaviour that is forbidden, prohibited or perceived as unacceptable in society. Markedly, taboos are based on morality, and they are usually linked to a religion or a culture. Notably, some people may perceive an act or behaviour as taboo, while others, such acts are unalarming. Their unique beliefs and cultural practices extensively govern the perception of most human societies concerning their environment. There is a strong recognition that efficient ecosystem management can only exist if there is a deeper understanding of how communities relate the nature.
For this reason, most societies value ecosystems and put more efforts to conserve and protect nature. However, it is essential to note that some cultural practices could result in environmental degradation. For instance, practices such as urban and industrial societies that use more significant amounts of natural resources as fuels impact the environment adversely. Nonetheless, the impacts of culture on the environment are less critical than the impacts of other factors.
One of the reasons why cultural taboos have less impact on the global environment is because humans rely on natural resources and the environment to sustain their livelihoods. Although some people dispute this fact, more people acknowledge and appreciate the importance of the environment, hence put in more efforts to protect and preserve it. More so, people are afraid of breaking cultural standards. Most communities have guidelines that have positive impacts on nature. Therefore, engaging in destructive activities means that one has broken the cultural taboo and is eligible for punishment. Therefore, to avoid the consequences of breaking cultural taboos, most people indulge in activities or behaviours that have less adverse effects. In this process, they indirectly protect the environment.
The second reason why cultural taboos pose fewer threats to the global environment is that more people are enlightened on the importance of protecting the environment. Although there was a time where human beings were careless and engaged in activities such as deforestation that threatened nature, this issue has been controlled in most regions. An increase in sustainability campaigns, where societies are informed about the importance of protecting and conserving the environment, also makes this aspect less critical than others. Organizations, whether government or non-government, have also joined hands in the sustainability journey. Therefore, more communities have tried to minimize practices that threaten the environment and have started engaging in beneficial activities such as planting trees and creating awareness for a wider congregation.
The third reason why cultural taboos are less critical regarding the global environment is that all people do not usually practise risky behaviours and activities that negatively affect the environment. For instance, activities such as deforestation, industrialization, and urbanization only take place in urban centres. Therefore, some regions do not experience these anthropometric activities that threaten the global environment. Additionally, more awareness has been created on the possible effects of misusing natural resources. Consequently, people are taking the warnings seriously and have begun to engage in efforts that positively impact the environment. There are also alternative measures to the practices that would have otherwise affected the environment negatively. For instance, instead of burning fossils for fuel, renewable sources of energy have been invented. As a result, cultural taboos pose fewer threats to the global environment than factors such as globalization.
Threat Two
Poor Health
According to the World Health Organization, poor health refers to the state of physical, social, physiological, and mental well-being, not merely the absence of disease. Poor health, therefore, is the state in which an individual is not socially, physically, or mentally well. Poor health is a significant concern for most regions globally, especially in developing countries. Although efforts have been made to promote all individuals’ health and well-being, achieving a healthy population has not been achieved yet. Nonetheless, most governments are working hard to achieve this goal by 2030. Even though poor health contributes significantly to a society’s slowed growth, it is not a critical threat to the global environment.
The first reason why the entire population’s poor health is not a critical threat to the global environment is that an impoverished population is less likely to indulge in anthropogenic activities that negatively impact the environment. For instance, individuals who are not healthy may not have4 the strength or the energy to take part in deforestation or burning fossil fuels. Additionally, the products or impacts of these activities contribute to the build-up of toxic substances, resulting in poor health. Therefore, not so healthy population is less likely to pose threats to the environment.
The second reason why poor health is less critical in affecting the global environment is that most unhealthy individuals are hospitalized, retained in institutions, or bed-ridden. For this reason, their interaction with nature is usually minimized. The third reason is that most people are aware of the benefits of the environment towards their health. For instance, an individual who is stressed up could take some time alone to connect with nature and afterwards feel relieved. Therefore, these individuals create awareness and campaign against environmental destruction.
Additionally, people are aware of the adverse effects of environmental degradation. For instance, water pollution results in diseases and death. Therefore, instead of carelessly polluting the environment, a population with unhealthy individuals tend to do their best to be in a clean and toxic-free environment. To achieve this objective, they conserve and protect the environment. Overall, the poor health of the entire population tends to control environmental degradation.
Conclusion
In conclusion, although cultural taboos and the poor health of the entire population could somehow contribute to environmental degradation, their effects are less critical than other factors. The common reason for this fact is due to the continuous awareness and increased knowledge regarding the benefits of a clean and sustainable environment. Cultural taboos and poor health of the entire population can be controlled, unlike globalization and climate change which take a more extended period to be addressed. Overall, cultural taboos and poor population, in my opinion, tend to protect the environment as opposed to continue destroying it, thus, are considered less critical threats to the global environment.
