Assume that the future that Louise Banks foresees is not necessary, but that she can change it by her choices. Against that background, does she wrong her child with Ian Donnelly, Hannah, by bringing her into being? Consider this question by using Rivka Weinberg’s principle of “procreative balance” (see page 101 of her article “It Depends”). Consider also whether death at the age of twenty-five is a wrong to Hannah. (See our two videos for that part of the question.)

Ian Donnelly leaves his wife, Louise Banks, because he cannot accept her choice to have a child she knew would die at the age of twenty-five from a painful disease. (Assume that Louise was free to choose otherwise.) Is Ian’s anger with Louise rational? Did Louise harm or wrong Hannah, their daughter, by bringing her into being despite knowing her fate? Reflect on these questions against the background of the non-identity problem, which Robert Merrihew Adams explains but does not call by that name. (See also the two videos assigned for 1/14.)
