PSYC2018 EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY #2
One of the most useful ways to apply statistics is by examining your wellness. There are many changes to our personal routines that we make in order to improve our condition. We can make changes to our spending habits, diet habits, fitness habits, mental health habits, sleep habits, study habits, you get the idea.
This extra credit assignment will give you the opportunity to try and improve your wellbeing. I encourage you to try it, it really isn’t that difficult of an assignment, it just takes a lot of time for me to explain and demonstrate it for you, that’s why this document is so long.
The assignment is due by the end of 03/28/2021. Since this assignment takes time, you should be careful to have your study underway well before the deadline.
The extra credit assignment:
Create an experimental study with ONLY ONE independent variable and ONLY ONE dependent variable. Your study should focus on some aspect of wellness, but since that’s a really broad category, I don’t think you’ll have difficulty selecting variables.
I know you all probably have a lot of ideas for things you could do to improve your wellbeing, but I really want to emphasize the need to only choose one independent variable (that you’re going to change), and one dependent variable (that you hope gets better). If you choose multiple independent variables, or multiple dependent variables, your results will be inconclusive. For example, if I decide to change my exercise routine from jogging to push-ups AND I change my exercise frequency from twice a week to four times a week, then I wouldn’t know if my increase in muscle strength is due to switching over to push-ups, or due to exercising more frequently. So again, please only choose one independent variable and one dependent variable.
For your study, you need to have:
Measurements from before and after your independent variable changes (in my example the change occurs on day 3, so days 1-2 include my measurements before it changed, and days 3-7 include my measurements after it changed.)
A written study report
For your written study report, you need to have:
A hypothesis section
A background section
A variables section
A plan section (this needs to include how you’re going to measure your variables)
A results section
A discussion section
A problems section
An implications for the future section
I would explain what should go in each section, but my example does a better job of showing you than if I were to try to define each section.
EXAMPLE
My hypothesis: I think switching from diet soda to regular soda will make me drink less soda overall. (In reality, a research hypothesis uses language that’s more official/formal than this, but this helps to get the ball rolling for the example.)
Background: I have been drinking diet soda for several years because I was worried about gaining too much weight, and I also saw a lot of commercials that talked about how much sugar is actually in regular soda, and it worried me. I recently noticed that I feel dehydrated and de-energized, and I think it might be because I drink 2 20 oz. bottles of diet soda each day. I think that if I switch back to regular soda I probably won’t need to drink 2 bottles each day; I’ll probably drink a lot less since it’s so filling. I think drinking less soda would be good for me, so it’s worth it even if the soda I drink has more sugar in it.
My variables: My independent variable is “type of soda I drink” and it has two conditions, diet and regular. My dependent variable is “amount of soda I drink.”
My plan: I will measure the amount of diet soda I drink for two days, then I will make the switch on day 3 over to regular soda. I will measure how much regular soda I drink for days 3-7. After day 7 I will look at my results. I will make sure not to drink any diet soda starting on day 3, and I will also make sure not to drink any regular soda on days 1 and 2.

Discussion: My hypothesis was supported. On the first two days I kept my normal routine of drinking 2 20 oz. bottles of diet soda. On day 3 I made the switch to regular soda and noticed that I didn’t need to finish my second 20 oz. bottle to feel full. The second bottle looked about half-full when I was done with it, so I wrote down that I drank “about 30 oz.” that day. On day 4 I drank both bottles of regular soda, but that night I felt a little sluggish. On day 5 it took me a long time to finish my first bottle of soda, and I didn’t drink much of my second bottle. I had to estimate again how much I drank from the second bottle because I didn’t have an exact way of measuring how much was left. On days 6 and 7 I only drank one bottle of soda.
Problems with my study: I think my plan for this study was pretty good, but I noticed that I couldn’t measure exactly how much soda I drank unless I finished the whole bottle. If I did a study like this again, I would need to use some sort of measuring cup to figure out how much I actually drank from an unfinished bottle.
Implications for the future: I think I will try drinking regular soda for at least another week and see how my body adjusts to it. I started to feel a little better hydrated and energized at the end of this study, and I think that drinking 20 oz. of regular soda is better for my body than drinking 40 oz. of diet soda. I might also do this study again and try to measure my level of energy and hydration as well, rather than just measuring how much soda I drink.
