Rituals have the power to evolve and tend to vary from one culture to the other. The term ritual can be defined as a series of activities involving words, actions, gestures, or objects respected in a certain culture and have to be performed with respect to cultural values (Irion, 2019). Among many cultures, death is not the end of life, but the death of a close friend or relative hits every member of the community differently. Once the death news has been received, there is a sequence of events that have to be considered to celebrate the life of the individual, honour the dead, and prepare the individual for the afterlife in ways that are unique to that particular culture. The funeral rituals discussed here can be described as unique, and people from outside cultures may find them fascinating.
Kiribati is a country found in Central Pacific, and the funeral ritual here is commonly referred to as “Kiribati Skull Burial.” After an individual dies and is buried, the deceased is exhumed by the family, and only the skull is taken, polished, oiled, and preserved for display at a special place in their home. The family makes offerings to the deceased, now the skull, which is mainly comprised of tobacco and food. In a different culture, in a country found in the southern part of Africa, Madagascar, they have a funeral ritual referred to as ‘Famadihana,” where people dig out their deceased members after five to seven years nourish them. They rewrap the deceased, perfume them, share stories with them, and dance with them before burying them again.
