Evil in Film
Part 1
Robert Ebert refers to the film ‘chaos’ as a ‘closed system’ of evils because it is full of horrific scenes, making him regret watching it. He refers to the film chaos as a closed system because it communicates evil will always win, leading to self-defeating and negative emotions among the viewers (Ebert para 16). He echoes that the film is full of endless brutality and heartless cruelty (Ebert para 1). The film shuns hope as well as the possibility of life. The horrific scenes are skeptical, terrible, and savage. He encourages the public not to watch the film but instead to stay away from it. Ebert also urges people not to believe that the movie is just a horror movie because it is filled with negligence, brutality, and scenes of heartlessness.
What Mr. Ebert understands as the opposite of all closed evils is that even if filmmakers aim to depict the evil in society, they should not portray messages that evil reigns. The film ‘chaos’ does not educate its viewers, but instead, it creates feelings of fear and hopelessness, yet it is not feasible that people will live in hideouts (Ebert para 14). Unlike Chaos,’ Mr. Ebert has given a four-star to other movies such as craven because the film provides insightful information on dealing with human loss, tragedy, and human nature. Ebert argues that the film lacks hope and it is full of futility and despair. Even though he does not expect the movie to have a happy ending, it should at least try to have a cathartic ending. Tragedy should help humans to learn how to deal with it in the future. Filmmakers and artists should aim to give people hope and help them deal with future tragedies.
Part 2
I believe filmmakers have the responsibility to entertain, educate and instill hope in their viewers. I, therefore, stand with Mr. Ebert on his view about the social responsibility of artists. The Deuce Bangalow respond to Mr. Ebert’s review and defend themselves by saying that, unlike Robert Ebert, the Heralds understand the film’s meaning. They quote what the Heralds liked, and they said it was better than the Japanese films (Ebert para 4). Furthermore, the filmmakers further question Mr. Ebert if he would prefer them not to display the evil as it was happening in the real world, as is evident in other PG13 movies. The filmmakers address Mr. Ebert’s claims by urging him not to sway the public not to watch the film and allow them to make their own decisions. Evil exists in society, and it should be put in the limelight so that society can be in sync with what is happening in the real world.
Ebert responds to their letter by claiming that the Chaos filmmakers are talented with gifts and skills. However, he claims that people decide to watch a film of their own will, but after watching the film ‘chaos,’ he was left disgusted and disheartened (Ebert para 9). He also quotes a review from another person who watched the film, and the brutal scenes also saddened him in the movie, and they would not even recommend it to their worst foes (Ebert para 11). Also, another reviewer called Laura Kern urges the public not to watch the movie. He questions if the serial killers, suicide bombers, and kidnappers have changed the film world in making content that depicts hopelessness and a cruel world.
Part 3
The movie open waters do not convey the closed system as in Chaos.’ This is because its filmmakers express a negative attitude towards the evil characters (Ebert para 13). Furthermore, they do not display messages that evil reigns in the real world.
