The USAFs Problem
The reason for extensively examining the USAF’s demographic statistics is that the primary aim of this research is to scrutinize the current status of diversity and inclusion at the Air Force and provide recommendations and strategies that the Air Force can incorporate to ensure greater inclusivity. The Air Force has engaged in numerous strategies to improve inclusion and diversity among its ranks in the recent past. These efforts include institutionalizing the office of diversity and inclusion in January 2021 to ensure that the USAF harnesses all the available talent and that every member feels respected and valued for their diversity, culture and background (Secretary of the Air Force, 2021).
However, the prevailing demographic figures such as 71% of its population being white and 79% being male suggest that it still has a long way to go before true diversity is attained. The population of the United States is increasingly becoming diverse, with 60.1% of the population being White alone, 13.4% being Black, 5.9% being Asian and 18.5% identifying as Latino or Hispanic (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). Based on these figures, the country is more diversified than the USAF. Therefore, the USAF and other organizations countrywide are being faced with a hurdle of ensuring that they reflect the diverse characteristics of the entire country and exceed this representation. Therefore, this study seeks to aid in solving this hurdle by contributing to the body of research on the different strategies that the USAF can incorporate to ensure that it supersedes the national standard of diversity and inclusion and goes further to become an example of equality, inclusion and diversity.
