DATA FOR ASSIGNMENT 1

FRENCH

The L2 French data for assignment 1 come from the FLLOC project (www.flloc.soton.ac.uk). The data are already available on Blackboard. There are three different sets of data reflecting the fact that learners were asked to do three different tasks:

1. Loch Ness: Retelling a story based on some pictures
2. Photos task: Asking question based on some pictures
3. Negatives tasks: Describing affirmative and negative actions based on some pictures.

The description of each of the tasks (including the pictures) is available on Blackboard as well. You need to choose only one task and analyse what you observe. The Loch Ness task is open to more kinds of analyses than the other two which will obviously have to be on interrogatives and negation.

SPANISH

The L2 Spanish data come from the SPLLOC project (www.splloc.soton.ac.uk). The data is already available on Blackboard. Learners are only doing task 1 above (telling the Loch Ness story) but in this case there are three different ages/proficiencies (Year 9, Year 13 and Undergraduates) so you can compare them and see whether learners improve with proficiency or not.

ENGLISH

The English data is a group of German children learning English as an FL in Dresden. The participants were interviewed in pairs by an investigator and audio or video recorded. The learners did a series of tasks: reciting or singing, talking about a book they had read in class, describing pictures and problem-solving (the ‘rat’ task).

Tasks are separated in the transcript by @G. Learners are identified as *GI1 and *GI2, *BO1 and *BO2; the investigator is *INV; the camera operator is *CAM.

GERMAN

For those of you who know German you can do the analyses of the L2 English data or the L1 German data. The latter is first language acquisition but it would give you the opportunity to focus on the analysis of certain grammatical aspects of German. The data are 16 transcripts from one monolingual German child called Caroline at around 2 years 5 months of age.
