Contrasting Perspectives: Harrison’s Rebellion and Societal Critiques in ‘Harrison Bergeron

PLEASE RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING POST OF ANOTHER CLASSMATE IN 50 WORDS OR MORE:
1. I did and did not cheer for Harrisons success. I admired his will to break away from what the ‘norm’ was. It took a lot of courage and self determination to go against the government and stand up for himself. I did not like that he put his family in a terrible position or that he wanted to gain control by his actions. He also had little disregard for others lives when he forced them to follow his lead, know what the punishment could ultimately be dead.
2. The significance of the dance was to show case how extreme handicaps. I believe the author wrote the story this way because of all the elements attached to the art of dancing. Music, art, and dancing play a role in almost every culture. It made the scene relatable to the readers and allowed them to picture what was happening.
3. Vonnegut sympathized with those who were less intelligent or average. The whole premise of the story is making everyone equal but not by making those who have lower IQs have devices to enhance their understanding but those who have higher IQs suffer. I do think that Harrison was a hero. He made his choice to go against the government for selfish reasons, not for the good of the people.
4. The world was going through several changes during the 1960, from the Vietnam war to the woman’s right movement and was experiencing a lot of change/unrest. It is hard to say what Vonnegut was criticizing but he clearly felt handicapped by his government or that the world was moving in that type of direction. This story relates to our society now with phones/social media having control over people. Algorithm’s are designed to sell you products and content, taking away your freedom or choice. You are being feed material, much like a handicap weighing you down, not allowing you to think for yourself and altering your train of thought. Your phone has control over you vs you having control over it.
