Attend a political event that takes place online. A political event may be a televised debate between two
Presidential candidates, a public protest or demonstration with a political cause, a political party’s convention, a public
talk among political speakers on societal issues, etc. You may attend a live virtual event organized by an organization, or a past event that is published on YouTube. Most importantly, it must be a recent event! Within the past calendar year
or so, but NOT older than that.
You will then write an essay, describing and evaluating what went on during that event. As part of this project, you
should note the speakers and the themes of their talks;
The essay should be between 1100-1200 words in length, incorporating an analysis in response to the following:
What action, event or campaign did you attend in virtual space? Please describe in detail (include the link within the main body of the essay).
Think critically of the separate items at the event: themes, goals, speakers, etc.
Note the successes or failures of the event by suggesting alternative ways of political participation.
Elaborate on the importance of political participation. Why does it matter now more than in the past? Think of how the former or current administration handled the COVID-19 crisis and/or police brutality, civil unrest, the economy, climate change, or other challenges.
Use material from at least 3 (up to 5) exterior sources. Use them in context with the event that you attended. These may be media coverage, books, scholarly journals, etc.
Conclude the essay by considering the following questions: What are your feelings about the event: theme, speaker, people’s participation, outcome, etc.? In what ways do you think you would be able to contribute to the event had you been there? What challenges/concerns do you think you would have faced? Would you participate in any political activity in the future? Why or why not?
