This may be explained by RME having a larger cetan number unlike MDO. The increase in cetan number leads to a smaller ignition delay and “soft” engine running, i.e., at a much more mild increase in burning pressure. The above-mentioned probable route of the combustion process resulted in a slight increase in particular fuel consumption.
The observed reduction in NOx content seems to corroborate the hypothesis of a more gentle burningprocess for esters-containing fuels. This may imply that the maximum combustion temperature was a little lower. The present phase of the research makes it impossible to explain the erratic variations in C.O. content in exhaust gas. As can be observed, depending on the engine load, either a substantial increase in C.O. content of exhaust gas (burning MDO with a 20% addition of rape oil ester) or a little reduction in C.O. content of exhaust gas in other burning mixtures.
The lack of substantial changes in the highest direct injection pressure figures should be read positively, as it shows that a slightly greater viscosity of rape oil ester compared to marine diesel oil has no detrimental impact on fuel injector performance. From an operational perspective, using an unstable fuel or mixing two incompatible fuels has the same result: asphaltenic sludge crystallizes in storage tanks, blocks filters and potentially separators, causing operational problems. As a consequence, good processes must be observed to reduce the risk of having to deal with the unstable gasoline in the tank.
