RQ1: How do gender and socio-cultural beliefs relating to female roles and society affect career progression in academia in Nigeria?
In most African communities, there is a wide gap between the power and influence of women compared to men. The majority of African cultures seem to view men as superior to women in terms of various aspects. For instance, most African women remain under the command of men from their childhood to elderly periods of their lives. When an African girl is born, the father decides the child’s fate, and the girl has no other option but to do as the father dictates. Before marriage, when the African girl is already an adult, her brothers direct the direction of her life. When the marriage time comes, the husband to the African girl takes total authority over the girls life decisions. The control over the African girls life is intense to the level that sons have authority over their mothers in their father’s absence. Therefore, African cultures, for instance, Nigeria, challenge women to progress in the academic field. Apart from women being viewed as generally weaker than men, most socio-cultural beliefs seem to favor the dominancy of men over women in different aspects of life. In Nigeria, for example, women are viewed as the family care providers, and any role that exceeds taking care of the family is considered a male’s task. In that light, from childhood, girls are taught differently from boys. In Nigeria, boys are educated on being responsible and providers of solutions for their families and community. On the other hand, girls are taught to be submissive to their male colleagues and provide care and support for their family and community.
