The company was started in 2012 by John Zimmer and Logan Green as a sub-service of their original ridesharing business Zimride. Zimride actually started in 2007, when the two were on a trip in Africa and observed people using crowd-sourced carpool services to get from place to place.

Lyft is considered a follower in marketing terms as a second to the market player in the rideshare market.
