The Legal/Ethical Issue in Nursing Paper and Presentation topic will be based on a legal issue you have identify in Module 3. This paper is to be based on an actual concern you have now in your nursing practice or if you are not practicing currently, one that you are concerned about in your future practice. For example, if you are going to discuss confidentiality, then you need to explain what setting this applies to specifically since this is an important topic for all nursing areas. It should be clear what your practice setting/specialty is from this paper and it will be important to do a thorough literature review to support your paper. • High-alert medications
• Nurse-patient staffing ratios
• Patient falls
• Delegation
• DNR, end of life (be sure to address the legal aspects of this not just the ethics)
• Informed consent
• Failure to communicate, Duty to Warn (i.e. suicidal, guns, violence)
• Violence in the Workplace
• Nurse substance abuse
• Medicinal use of cannabis
• Caring for vulnerable populations (prisoners, children, elderly, those with mental illness)
• Social media, recording of health care interactions
• Diversity in nursing
• Cultural Religions practices, medical battery
This assignment meets student learning outcomes
1. Identify one legal/ethical issue relevant to your area of nursing practice (or an area you would like to pursue in the future). Describe how this issue is relevant to your day-to day practice. This is the introduction to your paper and is the first section of your paper and does not need a heading. You may use first person for this section of your paper. As a reminder, the title of your paper should be at the top of this page in Time New Romanunbolded font.
2. Research this issue by reviewing scholarly nursing and related literature. A tab in the course banner University Libraries is a link directly to the library. ProQuest for Nursing and Allied Health and CINHAL Complete are recommended databases. In addition, NIU has a law library website.
3. Review this literature and discuss it. Note: If you do not choose high quality recent nursing sources as specified in the Reference criteria, your paper will likely fall short in this section as well. This section should start with the heading.
