Autism Spectrum Assignment (NCU)

The research on ASD treatment strongly suggests that parental participation in the implementation of any intervention plays an important role in improving outcomes. Especially with young children, parents are very likely to be the most influential person in a patient’s life; therefore, they may be the individuals most capable of implementing effective behavior change. Those parents will need training to become the change agents in their child’s life. This will involve providers assessing their child’s needs and goals, designing the appropriate (evidence-based, but individualized) intervention to address it, training the parents to conduct the intervention consistently and correctly, monitoring the patient’s progress, and adjusting the plan, as needed.

In this assignment, imagine that you and Mrs. Rivera have identified one symptom of ASD she would most like to work on with Cody. An example would be that he does not make eye contact when interacting with others. (You can select whatever ASD symptom you choose to work on.)

Describe some ideas that will help Mrs. Rivera to address that behavior. Your ideas must be based on related research and should include the following:

• Provide a specific, observable description of the symptomatic behavior.
• Indicate a clear statement of your specific goals.
• Explain your research-based strategy, with specifics about who, how, when, where, and why for each of the ideas.
• Determine how you and Mrs. Rivera might be able to monitor Cody’s progress and adjust as needed.

Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.
