Assessment Task:

Students are required to carry out a research project into student health and wellbeing based on the case study outlined in class.  We will all have the same research topic and case study.  The project will be approved by the tutor upon submission of a 2500 word research proposal (assignment 1).  Students should structure their proposal using the format discussed in class.  The proposal should outline your plans for the project and should include a literature review, aims and objectives, a methodology and a section detailing ethical considerations.  It is vital that you include supporting documents to demonstrate ethical awareness and decision making.  Supporting documents should include proposed questionnaires/interview questions, a participant information sheet, example consent form, competed risk assessment form, GANTT chart, etc.  More details will be discussed in class.

The proposal should be written in the 3^rd person, future tense.  The format and structure of the proposal will be covered in class and will be available in the lecture slides on Blackboard.

Case Study

“Breaking News!  Stress, anxiety and depression on the rise in university students.  Figures suggest link between poor mental health, lower attainment and higher drop out rates!”

Worried about the latest headlines regarding university students and stress, anxiety and depression, the vice chancellor of the university is keen find out about the links between mental health and other factors in order to put systems in place to better support students.  The VC is looking for a team of researchers within the university to design and carry out a study into student stress, anxiety, depression (SAD) and contributory factors.  The Applying Research to Practice module cohort has been put forward to carry out this important piece of research for USW.
